Given that “eroica” is Italian for heroic, this is the ideal event for a Cycling Hero. The original Eroica takes place every year on the ‘white’ roads of Tuscany and now other locations around the world, and requires all participants to adhere to strict clothing and bike rules to ensure the look and feel of a bygone cycling era. The Nova Eroica retains the epic on/off-road concept but allows more freedom to ride and wear what you like. The abundant vineyards and steep ‘sterrate’ or gravel roads on offer in the Nova Eroica Prosecco Hills in the <a href="https://cyclinghero.cc/region/veneto">Veneto</a> region make the event every bit the challenge of the Tuscan original. Gravel bikes are the ideal option given the hybrid road surfaces, but given the routes are over 70% asphalt, they are easily doable with a road bike, as well. The format of the event is as follows: there are several timed uphill segments that you are welcome to ‘race’ that count towards a sector and overall standing. The overall finishing time is not really important, so you can just ‘ride’ the other parts of the route tranquillo. There is a big party at the finish line, with tasty food and a festive environment where you can ‘relax’ and share your experience with others. All in all a wonderful and inclusive day out on the bike.

There are three options to choose from that all start and end at the beautiful Borgoluce Winery just outside of Susagana. All three options start together and share the same route up to the top of the first challenge, the steep paved climb to Via Collagù, which is also the location of the first replenishment station. After a wonderful descent, the routes pass through Soligo, where the longer options split off and head for Valdobbiadene, while the short version heads directly for Rolle. Upon reaching Valdobbiadene, the medium and long options head up to the highest point of the route near Combai, before taking in the breathtaking views at Rolle. Here the long option bears left and passes Revine Lake and Vittorio Veneto, before looping back and joining the other two routes at the Molinetto della Croda for a last replenishment station before the finish back at Borgoluce. Topped with its giant memorial to those who died in the Great War, the <a href="https://cyclinghero.cc/climb/monte-grappa-from-semonzo">Monte Grappa</a> is packed with history and with 10 ridable routes to the summit is now a Mecca for cyclists. The Monte Grappa Bike Day allows you to tackle one of these famous climbs to the top of this amazing mountain all on car-free roads. The non-competitive, free-to-enter event gives you the opportunity to cover 85 kilometres of challenging terrain in an environment dedicated to cyclists. With 28 hairpins and some of the most spectacular views in all of Italy available from the higher slopes, this mountain really is a special place to ride. No registration is needed all you need to do is make your way to Bassano del Grappa after 8 am on the morning of the event and enjoy a day without stress in beautiful surroundings.

A new route has been conceived for the Monte Grappa Bike Day 2024, in honour of the Giro stage that does the climb twice the day before. Starting from Bassano, the route heads to Semonzo then heads skywards via the Campo Croce. A short descent is followed by several steep steps before joining the larger road that takes you all the way to the Cima Grappa. A rewarding descent back down to Romano d&#39;Ezzelino is followed by a replenishing pasta party, and a slow roll back to the start in Bassano.

- From Semonzo -Of the ten ascents we focus on the climb from Semonzo which although not as popular as the ‘classic’ route up Strada Cadorna from Romano d’Ezzelino packs far more punch. Kicking off with a barrage of hairpins the road ramps up through the forest twisting back and forth so rapidly it almost makes you dizzy. Set on an 8-9% gradient the first nine kilometres are tough, yet harder slopes lie ahead. Following a brief flat section the gradient then rises above 10% and really bites, but the rewards are worth it as the colossal views out over the plains come into sight. With what looks like the whole of Italy laid out beneath you push on up through the final bends to arrive at the wonderful Rifugio Bassano which is just the perfect place for lunch.

When the Italian front was broken in WW1 the troops retreated to Monte Grappa and although crushed and exhausted, heroically built a defense barrier that prevented the Austro-Hungarian army from reaching the Venetian plains. Nowadays the only battles the mountain sees are those against gravity and although it doesn’t have a long history with the Giro d’Italia it has played host to two summit finishes, firstly in 1968 when Emilio Casalini triumphed and more recently in 2010 when Vincenzo Nibali won. Racing aside, the mountain is also famous for the Brevetto del Monte Grappa, a challenge to any rider who can complete all ten ascents in the space of a year.

Bassano del Grappa is home to the Nardini distillery which has produced its famous spirit since Bortolo Nardini purchased an inn at the eastern entrance of the wooden covered Bassano bridge in 1779.

You can start or finish where you like along the route, just make sure you go in the counter-clockwise direction (there are signs posted to remind you). If you choose to ride out of Corvara head west to start with the challenging Passo Gardena. 
Next on the program is the Passo Sella which places you in the grandest of arenas as you climb through the Città dei Sassi or &quot;City of Rocks&quot;. Over the other side of the Passo Sella its time to take on the highpoint of the loop, the Passo Pordoi. After an unreal 33 switchback descent from the Pordoi into Arabba, the shorter Passo Campolongo is your final challenge of the day before descending back into Corvara. 
Climbing a total of 1637 metres the Sellaronda is no walk in the park but its far from impossible, it is just, &#39;the perfect bike ride&#39;.

Billed as the hardest one-day Gran Fondo in Europe, entrants in the Sportful Dolomiti Race face over 200 grueling kilometres across five legendary passes to gain over 5000 metres of elevation. First run in 1995 as the Gran Fondo Campagnolo, the event now goes by the name of the Sportful Dolomiti Race and it&#39;s geared towards the more serious cyclist. Starting and finishing in Feltre, both the medio and Gran Fondo courses have been significantly updated for 2024. Gone is the ferocious Passo Manghen, added are the Passo Duran and Passo Staulanza for the Gran Fondo. Both options still retain the legendary <a href="https://cyclinghero.cc/climb/croce-daune-pedavena">Croce d’ Aune </a>as the final uphill. With its memorial to Tullio Campagnolo at the summit, this pass is holy ground to cyclists but by then all riders who have completed the full distance will be praying for the finish in Feltre’s Piazza Maggiore at the end of a truly epic day on two wheels.#onlyrealcyclists

Although this event is most famous for the longer Gran Fondo route, the Medio Fondo with it&#39;s 120 kilometres and 2800 metres of climbing is no slouch, either. After a brief flat section leaving Feltre, both routes tackle the first obstacle, the 990m Forcella Franche. After a descent back down to Agordo, the two routes split, and the Medio circles back and heads up the Forcella Aurine. The Gran Fondo continues on up the vicious Passo Duran, with its 12 km at over 8% average. This is followed by the less grueling but no less scenic Passo Staulanza, before a long descent back to Agordo and the medio fondo for the Forcella Aurine and Passo Cereda before another huge descent to the base of the Croce d’Aune. If you have paced it right, by the time you reach the memorial to Tullio Campagnolo at the summit you should be on your last legs, and all that is left is to roll down to the finish.

The route is composed of a 51km loop linking the towns of San Cassiano, La Villa, Corvara and Arabba via three fantastic mountain passes. Riding anticlockwise the first climb on the route is the Passo Campolongo with its series of 13 fantastic switchbacks set in the first two kilometres. After the fast descent through Arabba you continue to lose altitude until you hit the valley floor before embarking on the toughest climb of the route, the Passo Falzarego. Never too steep but quite long at close to 12 kilometres it is a wonderful journey through hairpins and tunnels to the cafés at the summit. To complete the 1370 metres of climbing you must now reach the top of the Passo Valparola which in places is as steep as 15% before rocketing down the exhilarating descent to La Villa and finish on the gradual climb to close the loop back in Corvara.

Colle Monte delle Forche and Sella di Raggio are next on the programme, followed by the Colle de Barbotto and the climbs to San Leo and Montemaggio.The final obstacle of the day, the Côte de Saint-Marin brings the riders through the capital of the tiny Republic of San Marino, before 25km of downhill and flat to the finish line in Rimini.Sunday, June 30th, 2024Stage 2 | Cesenatico-Bologna | 200km - 1890m climb - 16% max gradeThe second stage starts sedately enough: a 74km beautiful overture from the Romagna coast segues to the Emilia countryside, where the hillier main event can start. Four challenging climbs must be ridden before reaching the F1 town of Imola, including the Côte de Gallisterna, a short but potent ascent with a 12.8% average gradient. Two more challenges, the Botteghino di Zocca and Montecalvo are climbed before the route enters what is sure to be a dramatic finale.

The 19 km finishing loop from Bologna is tackled twice and is sure to be a nail biter. It includes the spectacular climb up to the Basilicata di San Luca on each lap, a fierce ramp that launched Primoz Roglic into pink in the opening Time Trial of the 2019 Giro d’Italia. This Tour de France Grand depart doesn&#39;t mess around, it will be two exciting and challenging days. Will the final wearer of the Yellow Jersey already be decided before even entering France?

If you only ever enter one mass participation cycling event then make it this one. Not as hard as other famous Gran Fondos such as the Marmotte in the Alps but the razzmatazz, the buzz that comes with the Maratona is unrivalled. Lining up in the cool shade of the mountains waiting for the sun to rise, surrounded by thousands of others, ahead of you banks of motorbike outriders ready to lead the riders away and helicopters hovering overhead it sends shivers down the spine. The route is a perfect test set in exquisite scenery and the carnival at the start follows you all the way round the course as you wind between the mighty <a href="https://cyclinghero.cc/region/dolomites">Dolomites</a> peaks. One of the great things about the Maratona is that there are 3 options. The first lap is common to all three, so you don&#39;t even need to decide before the start how many climbs are in the cards for you, you can decide out on the road.From La Villa, the route for all options begins with a gentle rise into Corvara where those on a mission rush to get past those travelling at a more leisurely pace. Arriving at the Passo Campolongo the excitement of hitting the first hairpins can go to your head so be careful not to ride too hard as you climb amongst the mass of riders. Once over the top the crowded roads begin to clear and up next is the long climb of the Passo Pordoi which further strings out the gigantic peloton. Continuing anticlockwise round the Sellaronda you cross the Passo Sella and then the Passo Gardena before returning to Corvara. If you only wanted to do the shortest option, you can bow out gracefully here having completed the Sellaronda Route (55 km, 1780 m). If you still have some energy, continue through the finish line and take on the Campolongo for a second time. At the intersection between the Medio and the Granfondo, turn left and take on the Falzarego pass from its South side then rejoin the Granfondo route and follow it to the finish for the Medio Route (106 km, 3130 m). Alternatively, turn right at the intersection and roll towards the Maratona’s jewel in the crown and by far its hardest obstacle, the Passo Giau. Its 10 kilometres of 10% gradient are a real killer then following this is the amalgamation of the Passo Falzarego and Passo Valparola. Whatever juice you still have will be thoroughly squeezed on the short but murderous ramp of the Mür de Giat before the relatively flat final run in to fill up on pasta and beer. Congratulations, you&#39;ve just done the Maratona Route (138 km, 4230 m)!

Held each year at the end of August, the Stelvio Bike Day allows riders to tackle the imperious <a href="https://cyclinghero.cc/climb/passo-dello-stelvio-from-prato">Stelvio pass</a> free from motorized traffic. And it’s not just the two famous sides of the pass, from <a href="https://cyclinghero.cc/region/bormio">Bormio</a> and Prato dello Stelvio that are closed but also the Umbrail Pass which joins the southern flank shortly before the summit. You will be amongst over 10,000 riders who will all be on their own personal journey to conquer, one, two, or even all three ascents of this formidable mountain. For those who choose just one, it has to be the <a href="https://cyclinghero.cc/climb/passo-dello-stelvio-from-prato">climb from Prato allo Stelvio </a>and its famous 48 hairpins, a challenge which is at the top of every rider’s bucket list. Rising to an altitude of 2,760 metres, though maybe the greatest monument to road building on earth, this is a serious undertaking for any rider but the reward of reaching the top is priceless.Mortirolo, Cancano, and the Gavia
The Stelvio is not the only famous climb in the Bormio area, and is also not the only one with a dedicated traffic-free day to take advantage off. You can fit all these into the same visit! Kicking off the climb-fest is the notorious Mortirolo, closed to traffic on the Thursday leading up to the Stelvio Bike Day. This is followed by the much more sedate Laghi di Cancano climb on Friday, which featured in the finale of the 18th stage of the 2020 Giro. Last but not least is the massive Gavia, a pass made famous by the race winning ride under heavy snowfall by Andy Hampsten in the 1988 Giro.

StelvioYour route depends on your start town and how brave you feel on the day. The ‘easiest’ ascent starts in Bormio and travels north to climb for 20 kilometres to gain 1,480 metres of altitude by the time you arrive at the summit. The classic ascent is to be found on the north side though starting from Prato allo Stelvio and during its 25 kilometres, you will climb 1,847 metres passing through an astonishing 48 hairpin bends up one of the hardest roads to tackle in the world. If you start this side and want to turn your ride into a loop then this can be achieved by riding over the top then down the connecting Umbrail Pass into the Munster valley then back to Prato all Stelvio. Of course, if you really want a challenge you can set yourself the task of riding and descending all three climbs, but this is not a challenge to be approached lightly!MortiroloThere are a total of 7 options up to the Passo Mortirolo, but the most famous (and most soul destroying) is the one from Mazzo. With its 12 km at an average of more than 10% and sections at over 17%, the Mortirolo will be a true test of your legs and your gearing. Laghi di CancanoThe only paved route up to the &quot;Laghi&quot; is the 9 km one from Bormio. At a relatively civilized 7% average gradient, it is a welcome break from the other behemoths in the area. The latter part of the climb follows a sequence of tight switchbacks that can be viewed from the Torri di Fraele at the top. Passo GaviaComparably epic in length and meters climbed to the Stelvio, the Passo Gavia has two options for getting to the top, directly from Bormio, or via Ponte di Legno. Of the two, the 19 km and 1450 m of vertical ascent from Ponte di Legno is the harder and more famous, with a 7.4% average gradient and what can best be described as a goat track leading to the summit at 2616 m. There is also a rather dimly lit tunnel you will pass through on this side, so make sure you have at least a tail light on board to remain visible to others. The ascent of the Gavia from the Bormio side is definitely not easy, but it is longer and less steep with only a 5.7% average gradient over 25 km. The middle section after the ski village of Santa Caterina is where things get real, easing off again as you approach the spectacularly desolate landscape near the passo.

Although it never exceeds 1100 m in altitude at any point, the &#39;Dragone&#39; will definitely put a burn in your legs, with a total of 2500 m climbing over its 108 km length. This is a low-key but challenging event with breathtaking scenery and a spectacular finish at the Nevegal ski station overlooking the town of Belluno.#takeonthedragon

Starting from the town of Belluno perched above the Piave river, the route first take on the Vena D&#39;Oro climb to warm up the legs before descending to the Santa Croce lakeside. After leaving the lake at Farra d’Alpago, the real climbing starts with 8 km and 600 m of elevation gain up to the edge of the Cansiglio plateau and the town of Tambre Sant Anna. After returning to valley near Lago Santa Croce, it&#39;s time for the 6km uphill into Pieve d&#39;Alpago. From here some well-earned flatter terrain returns you back to the edge of Belluno, and the final 20 km push to the finish in Nevegal, mercifully broken into two parts by a short, spectacular downhill section after Valmorel. Finish line passed, soak in the views before descending back to Belluno. Bravissimo!

The Sellaronda is often described as the perfect bike ride. Joining the <a href="https://cyclinghero.cc/climb/passo-gardena-from-corvara">Passo Gardena</a>, <a href="https://cyclinghero.cc/climb/passo-sella-from-plan-de-gralba">Passo Sella</a>, <a href="https://cyclinghero.cc/climb/passo-pordoi-from-pian-schiavaneis">Passo Pordoi</a>, and <a href="https://cyclinghero.cc/climb/passo-campolongo-from-corvara">Passo Campolongo</a> it’s set in the most magical scenery on earth and for only two days a year (there is also a <a href="/special-event/sellaronda-bike-day-spring">Spring Edition</a>), it’s made even more special thanks to the removal of motorized traffic.Participation is free, there’s no need to register and you can choose where and when to start and also which direction you ride to cover the 51 kilometres of silky smooth tarmac. You can take all day stopping for a long lunch at one of the many restaurants and cafés on route or you could challenge yourself to ride the loop as many times as you can, and every permutation in between. There’s no fixed plan, no time to beat, no pressing agenda at all except to relish the immaculate scenery and absence of motor vehicles as you wind between the towering peaks of the <a href="https://cyclinghero.cc/region/dolomites">Dolomites</a>.

You can start or finish where you like along the route, just make sure you go in the counter-clockwise direction (there are signs posted to remind you). If you choose to ride out of Corvara head west to start with the challenging Passo Gardena. 
Next on the program is the Passo Sella which places you in the grandest of arenas as you climb through the Città dei Sassi or &quot;City of Rocks&quot;. Over the other side of the Passo Sella its time take on the highpoint of the loop, the Passo Pordoi. After an unreal 33 switchback descent from the Pordoi into Arabba, the shorter Passo Campolongo is your final challenge of the day before descending back into Corvara. 
Climbing a total of 1637 metres the Sellaronda is no walk in the park but its far from impossible, it is just, &#39;the perfect bike ride&#39;.

If there is one event that will make you want to relocate to Italy, it is the Gran Fondo Segafredo. Taking in both the Colli Asolani and the Prosecco Hills, the 105 km circuit will go by so many spectacular views of the <a href="https://cyclinghero.cc/region/veneto">Veneto</a> region that you might have a problem staying on the road! Although there are no seriously long ascents to conquer, the rolling vineyard landscape adds up to 1400 m of total climbing for the day. #piccolofiandreveneto

The start line for the event is in the village of Posagno, the birthplace of the famous sculptor Canova. After a short downhill, the route crosses the Piave river and enters the Prosecco region south of Valdobbiadene. The first significant uphill of the day is into the town of Combai, nestled on the hillside of the Monte Cesen and affording great views of the Prosecco valley. Passing back over the Piave, the route enters the Colli Asolani area once again and reaches the next challenge of the day, the Forcella Mostaccin, a 3.5 km ascent to the ridge of the Asolani hills. Continuing westward to the edge of Bassano del Grappa, the route then starts the last uphill of the day in the shadow of the Monte Grappa, before returning to Possagno and a last still kick up to the impressive Canova Temple.

Devised in 2003 to celebrate the end-of-season wine harvest and the wonderful Italian gastronomy the Prosecco Cycling (also known as the Prosecco Gran Fondo) in the <a href="https://cyclinghero.cc/region/veneto">Veneto</a> region is a unique cycling festival that’s the very definition of  ‘La Dolce Vita’. At just under 100 kilometres long and climbing a modest yet still challenging 1550 metres along its route the event really is perfect for all abilities. With no fearsome high-altitude passes or savage gradients (well, not many) to contend with you can roll through the stunning scenery without a worry in the world. For those who like a bit of competition, however, although the complete route isn’t clocked there are timed climbs where you can put some extra effort in if you feel the need to burn a few more calories before sampling the fine food and drink available not only at the finish but all the way around the route.

The start line for the event is in the center of Valdobbiadene from where you head into the rolling hills and Prosecco vineyards at the base of the Alps to the north of Venice. Never venturing into the high mountains the route links from village to village and vineyard to vineyard in idyllic settings punctuated by frequent little climbs. Of the many on the route four of them are timed, the first of which a 1400 metre ramp, arrives into the village of Zuel.Following this you can if you desire give it ‘full gas’ on the Muro de Ca’ Del Poggio, Via dei Colli and the Salita de Collalto, all within around 30 kilometres of each other. After this, if you haven’t already it’s now time to relax and complete the ride back into Valdobbiadene where seafood and wine will be served half way up the last climb to end a ride that is every bit as wonderful as it sounds.#thepeerlessone

Happening the day before the Veneto Classic pro bike race, and using much of the same route, the VENEToGo bills itself as more of a social ride than a race. Indeed, the French (staggered) start and lack of overall results mean that there is no reason to ride hard, at least not on the flatter sections. However, the timed uphill sections (3 on the 80 km route, 4 on the 98 km one) offer ample opportunity to &quot;stretch your legs&quot;.Each group leaves the start near Bassano de Grappa escorted by a past great of the sport, with several culinary stops along the way to sample regional food and drink. The event has been conceived by the ex-pro Filippo Pozzato, who is also behind the cluster of pro cycling races happening in the region around the same time, including the Giro del Veneto, the Serenissima Gravel, and the Veneto Classic.What better way to wind down the summer cycling season? #ridethedreamland

Starting at the Villa Ca’ Cornaro on the outskirts of Bassano, the route heads East towards the Colli Asolani. The longer option continues all the way to the top of the first timed climb at Paderno del Grappa before heading back towards Bassano, skirting the base of the mighty Monte Grappa.Crossing the Brenta river and passing through quaint Marostica, both routes next take on the Veneto’s best impression of a Belgian cobbled climb, the short but steep ‘La Tisa’. Only 300 m long, but averaging more than 15%, the uneven road surface of La Tisa makes it deceptively hard. Returning to flatter terrain for a breather, next on the program after passing back through Marostica is ‘La Rosina’, a classic climb of 2 kilometers at 7.4% that rewards with spectacular views of the area. The last timed section of the day is ‘Diesel Farm’, a vicious uphill climb amid the vineyards that will ensure you feel no guilt sampling the local delicacies that await a short distance after the summit. From here it is a relaxed last few kilometers to the finish back at the Villa Ca’ Cornaro,  where more food and drink await. Bravo e buon appetito!
