The Dolomites are renowned for being a premier destination for road cycling, skiing, mountain biking and hiking. This UNESCO Heritage gem attracts people from all over the world to its fantastic roads and trails. But it could be argued that the best way to explore the Dolomites is on a gravel bike, as it allows you to sample the best of both the road and off-road experiences on offer.

This bike tour begins with gravel explorations around Cortina d’Ampezzo, the Pearl of the Dolomites, situated along the Colalzo-Dobbiacco bike path, which was created from the old railway line. This path could well rank as one of the most spectacular sections of gravel riding in the world, with views of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and a visit to idyllic Lake Misurina.

Next, take the easier or more challenging option to the charming town of Brunico in Valpusteria, a spectacular valley seemingly made for exploring by bike. Following a steady uphill into Corvara, you’re free to ride the Sellaronda road loop, considered to be “the most beautiful bike ride in the world”, or opt for the equally spectacular gravel alternative. Along the way, enjoy boutique luxury lodging with fantastic breakfasts and discreet daily support

Arrival in the Heart of the Dolomites

The adventure begins with a short transfer from Venice or Treviso to Pieve di Cadore, where it’s time to continue by bike toward Cortina d’Ampezzo, the “Pearl of the Dolomites” and your home for the next two nights.

The more direct route follows the converted railway line as it climbs steadily up the Boite Valley, while the more ambitious option heads for Auronzo along a beautiful gravel path leading to Passo Tre Croci. Both routes allow time for an evening aperitivo on Corso Italia, Cortina’s famous pedestrian street just steps from your hotel.
